Our Curriculum

Teaching and Learning at St Anthony’s

St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School is a Visible Learning School. This means the principles and practices which underpin the delivery, assessment and reporting of the Australian Curriculum are based on the research gathered and analysed by Professor John Hattie and his team. Learning and Teaching is visible when the learning goal is not only challenging but is explicit; when there is feedback given and sought and when teachers and students are fully engaged.

St Anthony’s Learning and Teaching Principles

The following principles are the foundation of how we aim to develop a culture of learning in the context of our Catholic faith at St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School:

  • We seek to inspire high expectations for learning and teaching that maximises engagement, progress and achievement for each learner in our school.
  • We acknowledge the importance of equity and the right of every student to access an inclusive curriculum that is differentiated and which celebrates the achievements of our diverse learners.
  • We believe in the positive influence of research-based whole school approaches which build a common language and suite of common practices to enhance teaching and learning.
  • We emphasise student engagement and teacher efficacy.
  • We support and develop emerging and current technologies to enhance learning and teaching.

The Curriculum

Our teachers teach the Rockhampton Diocesan Religious Education Program and the subjects of the Australian Curriculum for Years Prep to Year 6. Classroom teachers are responsible for the teaching of English, Mathematics, Science, HASS, Visual Arts and Technologies. Specialist teachers are responsible for teaching Physical Education, Music and Drama.

Whole School Approaches

Whole School Approaches aim to build a common language and common practices for all learners – both teacher and student.

Learning Goals, Success Criteria and Feedback
Visible Learning aims for students to know what they are learning (goals) and what success looks like (success criteria) and what they need to focus on next (feedback). All teachers, at all levels of planning, across all Year Levels, establish learning goals and success criteria for, and with, their students.

The Daily 5 and C.A.F.E. Literacy approach is a framework for structuring and delivering components of English so that students develop lifelong habits of reading, writing, and working independently.

The benefits of The Daily 5 and CAFÉ literacy approach for teachers and schools include the following:

  • Students develop independence, stamina, and accountability;
  • Improves schoolwide literacy achievement; and
  • Behaviours of independence transfer to other content areas.
  • Reading and writing goals are personalised for each student.
  • A lifelong enjoyment for reading.
